Bass is the most under-directed instrument in Suno prompts — people describe everything except the bass, then wonder why it's wrong. Direct it.
1. Define the bass's JOB:
- Locked-in:
bass locked with the kick drum, simple root notes, driving - Melodic:
melodic bass line, walking, counter-melody under the vocal - Funky:
syncopated funky bass, popping, rhythmic
Pick one job. 'Good bass' isn't a direction.
2. Match bass busyness to genre: busy bass suits funk, jazz, prog. Simple bass suits pop, ballads, EDM. If your pop song has a jazz bassist, the genre words and bass words are fighting — align them.
3. Reference bassists, not adjectives: Paul McCartney style melodic bass, James Jamerson groove, simple root-note punk bass — player references nail the feel instantly.
4. Exclude the opposite: too busy? Exclude busy bass, bass solos, overplaying. Too boring? Exclude static bass, root notes only.
5. Carve its space: if the bass fights the kick, that's a mix issue — in stems, sidechain or EQ the bass around the kick (cut bass slightly where the kick punches).
