Duets are hard because Suno wants one vocalist per song. Random voice-swapping is the default failure — you need to script the handoffs explicitly.
1. Label every section with its singer:
[Verse 1 – male vocal only, warm baritone]
[Verse 2 – female vocal only, soft alto]
[Chorus – both voices together, harmony]
Never leave a section unlabeled or Suno picks whoever.
2. Describe the two voices distinctly. 'Male vocalist' and 'female vocalist' is too vague — they'll bleed together. gravelly baritone male vs clear bright soprano female — maximum contrast keeps them separate.
3. Write the trade into the lyrics. Alternate the lines literally:
[Male] I left the light on
[Female] I never came home
Bracket labels in the lyrics reinforce the section brackets.
4. Expect to comp it. The reliable pro move: generate the male part alone, generate the female part alone (same style otherwise), and stitch them in a DAW. Two clean solo takes beat one confused duet take every time.
5. Keep the backing identical in both generations so the comp sounds like one song.
