For ages 5-8, the safe singing range is roughly C4 to A4 — about a sixth. Young voices can't comfortably jump octaves or belt high notes, so the melody has to live in that narrow band.
Prompting it:
children's song, narrow vocal range C4 to A4, simple stepwise melody, no big jumps, no high belts
'Stepwise' is the key word — it tells Suno to move by neighboring notes instead of leaping.
Structure for kids:
- Short phrases (4-6 words per line) — little lungs need breath spots
- Heavy repetition — the chorus should repeat the same words, not just the same melody
- Call and response:
[Kids echo: ...]works beautifully - One idea per song — don't cram verses full of vocabulary
In Exclude: wide vocal range, octave jumps, belting, vocal runs, complex melody.
Tempo: keep it moderate (100-120 BPM). Too slow and kids lose the thread; too fast and they can't get the words out.
Test it yourself: sing the generated melody. If YOU have to strain or leap, a 6-year-old has no chance. The sing-it-yourself test never lies.
