Ha! Maybe a little of both, but you're not wrong about the sound. That default Suno synth is the "Suno sound" everyone recognizes - the same glossy supersaw-ish patch on a thousand songs. It's what Suno reaches for whenever your prompt just says "synthesizer" and nothing else.
The fix is specificity. Suno only defaults to that patch when you leave the door open:
1. Name a real synth character
Instead of synthesizer, try:
warm detuned analog polysynth, 1978 styleDX7-style FM electric pianoMoog-style round bass synthgritty mono lead, portamento
The more specific the era and texture, the further you get from the default.
2. Tell it what NOT to use
Suno actually respects this in the Style box:
no generic EDM supersaw, no stock synth presets
3. Describe the texture, not the instrument
Words like dusty, warped cassette keys, lo-fi wurlitzer, granular pad push it into weirder territory where the default patch can't survive.
4. The nuclear option: stems
Generate the song, click ... > Get Stems, mute Suno's synth stem entirely, and play/record your own keys over it in a DAW. A lot of producers use Suno for the song and vocals and replace every synth themselves. That's honestly where the most original-sounding Suno music comes from.
So no, you didn't wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Vague prompts get the house patch. Specific prompts get *your* sound.
